Description

Microchip’s portfolio of MCP794x and MCP795x  RTCCs offer low-cost system timekeeping solutions that are highly integrated with a usable amount of non-volatile memory. They offer a combination of features that are very effective when operating within a single battery backed clock device. RTTCs track time with resolutions as small as 1/100th of a second and issue alarms on a wide variety of time conditions. They maintain accurate time through system shutdowns by automatically switching over to an external battery back-up source. RTCCs are designed to operate using a 32.768 kHz quartz crystal and can digitally compensate for frequency variance caused by crystal tolerance and temperature. Microchip RTCCs have an I2C or SPI interface for configuration, reading, and writing the time. Additionally, alarm interrupt requests, square wave output, and system reset control signals are available on dedicated pins.

Features, Applications

The MCP7940M series of low-power Real-Time Clocks (RTC) uses digital timing compensation for an accurate clock/calendar and a programmable output control for versatility. Using a low-cost 32.768 kHz crystal, it tracks time using several internal registers. For communication, the MCP7940M uses the I2CTM bus. The clock/calendar automatically adjusts for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap years. The clock operates in either the or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator and settable alarm(s) to the second, minute, hour, day of the week, date or month. Using the programmable CLKOUT, frequencies 32.768, 8.192 and 4.096 kHz and 1 Hz can be generated from the external crystal. The RTC series of devices are available in the standard 8-lead SOIC, TSSOP, MSOP, PDIP and 2x3 TDFN packages.
