    McGraw-Hill Introduces New Digital Writing Program for Texas Middle and High School ClassroomsWriter's Workspace offers an interactive online approach to developing and refining writing skills for 21st century students

    DALLAS, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- McGraw-Hill School Education Group, the leading provider of both print and digital educational materials for students at all grade levels, has developed its first online writing and grammar program for middle and high school students. This program is designed to engage 21st century students through online, interactive writing workshops, while providing rigorous writing and grammar instruction.     Adhering to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), and College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), Writer's Workspace supports guided writing and grammar instruction through a three-step process. First, students are expected to think about and respond to literature in the genre they will be writing in, then bridge to writing through short and focused exercises, and finally, continue building acquired skills by writing longer compositions.

    Key student components include 24 writing workshops per grade level, interactive student models, and interactive graphic organizers, as well as a comprehensive grammar and composition eBook. Teachers are provided with a management system to review and comment on student writing during any stage of the writing process.     Smartphone Subscribers Now Comprise Majority of Mobile Browser and Application Users in U.S.Males Lead the Charge on Smartphones but Females Gaining Ground

    RESTON, Va., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- comScore, Inc. , a leader in measuring the digital world, today released a report on mobile application and browser usage among Smartphone subscribers based on data from its comScore MobiLens service. The study found that the number of Smartphone users accessing mobile content through browsers and applications now surpasses that of Non-smartphone users. In the 3 month average ending August 2010, Smartphone subscribers made up 60 percent of those who used a downloaded application and 55 percent of those who used a browser. The study also described the demographic profile and top content categories for Smartphone subscribers accessing applications and browsers.

    App and Browser Usage by Mobile Device

    In August, 75.6 million mobile subscribers ages 13 and older used downloaded applications, with Smartphone users representing 60.4 percent, up from 43.6 percent in August 2009. For the same period, 80.8 million mobile subscribers used their browser, with Smartphone subscribers comprising 55.5 percent, up from 41.4 percent a year ago.

    Female App/Browser Users on the Rise

    In August 2010, males accounted for 56 percent of smartphone subscribers who used downloaded applications or browsers. Females however are narrowing the gap with the remaining 44 percent, representing a 5.5 percentage point increase versus the corresponding August 2009 period. Among the various age segments, 13-17 year olds are exhibiting the strongest growth in using downloaded apps or browsers, up 1.4 percentage points versus year ago to 6.9 percent of the audience. Persons ages 18-24 are also accelerating adopters of app/browser usage, representing 16.7 percent of the audience, a 0.6-percentage point increase.

    Weather and Search Represent Top Content Categories

    Weather and maps represented the top content categories accessed through downloaded applications in August, used by more than one-third of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Social networking applications were used by 30 percent, while search and news applications were used by 18 percent.

    Search was the most popular category accessed through browsers, reaching 54 percent of the smartphone audience. 43 percent of smartphone subscribers accessed social networking sites via browser, followed by news (40 percent), weather (36 percent) and sports information (32 percent).

    Northrop Grumman to Supply Radio Communications System for UK MoD's Camp Bastion Airfield, Afghanistan

    LONDON, October 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's Europe-based air traffic management systems subsidiary, Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems, has been awarded a contract by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to provide a ground-to-air voice radio system for air traffic control operations at the MoD's Camp Bastion airfield in Helmand Province, the main handling airfield for UK operations in Afghanistan.

    The complete radio system, which will include the T6 VHF / UHF transmitter and receiver equipment, will be fitted into deployable mobile cabins designed to be air-lifted into theatre. The cabins will be fitted out at Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems' facility in Market Deeping, UK. This approach will ensure rapid insertion into current air traffic operations with a delivery target of late 2010.

    An emergency radio system will also be provided in the new air traffic control tower being built at the Camp Bastion Airfield. A communications training programme based at Royal Air Force (RAF) Leeming will also be supplied under the contract.

    WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In May, the University of Virginia was rocked by the murder of senior Yeardley Love by a fellow student. Even more shocking than Love's tragic death was the number of fellow students who had witnessed the many incidents of abuse she had endured. Officials at Howard University are building on efforts to increase student awareness of dating violence through an innovative public education campaign to help more students identify the red flags of abusive relationships and take action.

    Timed to coincide with October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Howard University is launching its Red Flag Campaign and blanketing its Northwest Washington campus with attention-getting red flags and a series of posters that underscore the warning signs, or "red flags," of abusive relationships. Students are being urged to speak up and seek assistance when they see signs of dating violence in their friends' relationships.

    In 21 percent of all college dating relationships, one partner is being abused, and women ages 16-24 experience the highest per capita rate of intimate partner violence.

    Created in 2007 by the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance with funding from the Verizon Foundation and Verizon Wireless HopeLine (R) program, the Red Flag Campaign now appears on more than 50 college campuses across the U.S.

    "The Yeardley Love tragedy was a wake-up call for all of us who work with young people," said Barbara Griffin, vice president for student affairs at Howard University. "What we like so much about the Red Flag Campaign is that it challenges students to watch out for friends who may be involved in an unhealthy relationship. Our message is: 'When you see a red flag, speak up.' "

    In addition to kicking off the Red Flag Campaign, Howard University will screen "Telling Amy's Story," a documentary that Penn State Public Broadcasting produced with funding from the Verizon Foundation. This documentary, airing on PBS stations nationwide, tells the story of Amy Homan McGee, a Verizon Wireless employee who was murdered by her estranged husband in 2001. Howard University and Verizon also will host a panel discussion with students, community leaders, health experts and local law enforcement officials following the screening.

    Campaign posters, which feature young men and women who look like typical students, deal with a number of "red flags" that students should be aware of, including emotional abuse, isolation, coercion and excessive jealousy. Three of the posters are geared toward female students, and three toward male students. In order to heighten interest and generate more attention, the red flags will be dropped on the grounds of Howard University prior to the launch event, without warning or explanation, followed by the posters.

    Howard University received a $5,000 grant from the Verizon Wireless HopeLine(R) program to support the campus' Red Flag Campaign. Through HopeLine, no-longer-used wireless phones - all models, from all wireless carriers - are collected and accessories are refurbished, recycled or sold.     General Dynamics Awarded $25 Million by U.S. Army to Produce MK47 Weapon Systems

    CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products has been awarded a $24.9 million contract by the U.S. Army to produce MK47 advanced lightweight grenade launcher (ALGL) systems. The contract supports a foreign military sale and is a firm fixed price award for 130 MK47 systems that each include the lightweight video sight systems, spare parts and technical support. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in January 2012 and be completed by August 2012. General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products is a business unit of General Dynamics .

    Tyco International Completes Sale of European Waterworks Business

    ICMI's most recent Contact Center Operations Report, which polled over 430 contact center professionals worldwide representing a range of industries and professions, indicated that only a little more than one-third of contact centers were using self-service applications (IVR- and Web-based) in 2008. Yet, more than 37% of those surveyed said they planned to invest in self-service technologies in 2009.

    "Our survey will reveal the types of investments contact centers have made and how they're paying off," said Layne Holley, ICMI's Director of Community Services. "We'll also learn how organizations are approaching self-service offerings from a strategic as well as a tactical perspective. How are they developing their self-service strategies? How are they managing the customer experience in that environment?"
