SGI Sets World Record for Oracle E-Business Suite PerformanceIn Benchmark Tests, SGI Altix Delivers at Least Twice the Performance of All Other Tested Systems

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SGI today announced verified test results that show SGI(R) Altix(R) to be the industry's fastest, most scalable Linux(R) system for real-world, multi-tier applications running Oracle Database 10g. In fact, SGI delivered the best and only "All Linux" benchmark result with a medium-sized Oracle Database 10g.

Running the Oracle E-Business Suite 11i (11.5.10) Benchmark, also known as the Oracle Applications Standard Benchmark (OASB), an SGI(R) Altix(R) 450 system delivered twice the performance of the previous record holder in tests that measure average response times for 2,000 online users. The SGI system also delivered record hourly throughput in Oracle's measurement of order management and payroll batch business processes.

"For years, SGI customers have known that SGI Altix systems move data faster than any other servers in their class," said Ken Won, director, enterprise data management, SGI. "These Oracle benchmark results offer more proof that SGI's extensive experience in helping organizations work with big data and complex business processes is paying dividends for today's enterprise."

Altix performance scales as workload grows

The Oracle E-Business Suite 11i benchmark test results demonstrate the exceptional scalability of the Altix 450 system. In fact, the SGI Altix 450 actually improves as the number of users grows. At 1,400 users, Altix delivers at least 23 percent more throughput than other tested systems. The Altix advantage increases to 36 percent with 1,800 users, and reaches 40 percent with 2,000 users.

In the online test, Altix 450 retains a consistently low response time, despite the addition of hundreds of online users. For instance, as the number of users grows from 1,400 to 2,000, the average response time of the Altix 450 slows by only 12 percent(1), a 3X advantage over any tested system.

"SGI Altix scales where other systems fail, and this is terrific news for organizations with complex e-business environments running Oracle Database 10g," added Won. "No other system put to these tests provides the Altix system's blistering fast response times and high throughput. Meanwhile, SGI uniquely delivers the scalability and headroom enterprises need to meet their future needs on the same system."

SGI's tested configuration included: -- Database server tier: SGI Altix 450 system driven by 12 Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 dual-core, single-threaded processors and featuring 144GB of memory and running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 4 (Update 4) -- Application server tier: Four SGI(R) Altix(R) XE240 servers, each powered by two Intel(R) Xeon(R) dual-core processors and 16GB of memory and running Oracle Enterprise Linux -- Storage tier: SGI(R) InfiniteStorage 4500 system with 1TB of memory with a dual RAID controller and eight trays, each outfitted with 16, 146GB, 15K RPM drives

The results were independently audited and verified on July 25. For complete results and configurations, visit: http://www.oracle.com/apps_benchmark/html/results.html

The Oracle E-Business Suite 11i benchmark provides metrics for comparing Oracle application performance on different system configurations. It uses a mixed workload model to simulate the various transactions operating within an enterprise. The online benchmark exercises the user interface flows most frequently used by Oracle customers. The batch flow tests consist of a high- volume order processing program used to process and import orders in batch mode, and a payroll processing program used to process employee checks in batch mode.

United Solar Ovonic Laminates Power Alcoa's Kawneer Facility in CaliforniaThe 588KW UNI-SOLAR roof-mounted solar power system demonstrates the merits of harnessing energy from the sun to generate electricity on an industrial scale

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- United Solar Ovonic, a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. , announced today the installation of more than 4,300 of UNI-SOLAR(R) thin-film photovoltaic (PV) laminates to power Alcoa's Building and Construction Systems' Kawneer manufacturing facility in Visalia, California. The UNI-SOLAR laminates will provide approximately 80 percent of the 200,000 square-foot facility's electricity needs during periods of highest demand on the electricity grid.

"This is another important illustration of the potential of UNI-SOLAR products in large-scale commercial installations," said Subhendu Guha, president and chief operating officer of United Solar Ovonic. "These installations benefit our customers, and they benefit the environment. We are gratified to help lead the growing movement toward the increased use of renewable sources of energy."

"UNI-SOLAR panels were a good fit for this particular project," said David Schlendorf, president, Alcoa Building and Construction Systems.

Schlendorf continued: "This solar power project increases California's supply of clean and reliable renewable energy. Alcoa is committed to implementing sustainable energy solutions and is dedicated to supporting alternative energy supply options that benefit our key stakeholders - including our employees, communities, customers and suppliers."

Alcoa partnered on the project with DEERS, a global solar power project developer and owner of the DEERS Solution(TM), the patent pending solar roof top attachment system, and Constellation Energy Projects & Services (CEPS), which constructed and will own and operate the solar system. Alcoa agreed to host the new solar power system and purchase the electricity generated.

The Alcoa project is owned and operated by Constellation Energy Projects & Services, which is currently developing and constructing several solar photovoltaic projects - similar to the size and scope of the Alcoa project - in the United States.

iTunes Store to Stop Selling NBC Television Shows

CUPERTINO, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today announced that it will not be selling NBC television shows for the upcoming television season on its online iTunes(R) Store (http://www.itunes.com/). The move follows NBC's decision to not renew its agreement with iTunes after Apple declined to pay more than double the wholesale price for each NBC TV episode, which would have resulted in the retail price to consumers increasing to $4.99 per episode from the current $1.99. ABC, CBS, FOX and The CW, along with more than 50 cable networks, are signed up to sell TV shows from their upcoming season on iTunes at $1.99 per episode.

"We are disappointed to see NBC leave iTunes because we would not agree to their dramatic price increase," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "We hope they will change their minds and offer their TV shows to the tens of millions of iTunes customers."

Apple's agreement with NBC ends in December. Since NBC would withdraw their shows in the middle of the television season, Apple has decided to not offer NBC TV shows for the upcoming television season beginning in September. NBC supplied iTunes with three of its 10 best selling TV shows last season, accounting for 30 percent of iTunes TV show sales.

Next Inning Technology Updates Outlooks for SiRF Technology, Packeteer, QuickLogic, and International Rectifier

PRINCETON, N.J., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Next Inning Technology Research (http://www.nextinning.com/), a subscription service focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has published updated outlooks for SiRF Technology , Packeteer , QuickLogic , and International Rectifier .

New subscribers will also receive Next Inning's Q2 State of Tech report, a $149 value, free when they sign up for a complimentary 21-day trial subscription to Next Inning. In its entirety, the State of Tech report is nearly 100 pages chock-full of charts, tables, and actionable investment commentary:

    https://www.nextinning.com/subscribe/index.php?refer=prn541

In response to member inquiries, Editor Paul McWilliams wrote: "Prior to buying Centrality, SiRF's design approach was to rely on an external processor. The STMicro design win at Garmin uses a chip with an integrated processor...In my opinion it will be easier for SiRF to fully integrate a true one-chip solution than it will be for others to integrate RF and maintain their current performance with a multi-chip solution. However, this is not to imply they won't accomplish this..."

McWilliams also looks at these topics:

-- Does the "leave of absence" by International Rectifier's CEO represent a real threat to investors? How is the pricing of International Rectifier's options telling a different story than the headlines? -- Is the recent weakness in SiRF shares overdone? Do competitive threats from STMicro represent a legitimate cause for concern for SiRF investors? -- What strategic moves can be expected from Packeteer over the rest of this year? -- How would McWilliams describe QuickLogic's unique approach to its business, and why is this unique approach important?

Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 281% since its inception versus 98% for the Nasdaq.

    BERLIN, Allemagne, August 31 /PRNewswire/ --

    - IFA 2007 - HALL 12, STAND No 109

    BERLIN, Allemagne, August 31 /PRNewswire/ --

    - IFA 2007 - Hall 12, Stand No 109
