TV Choice and Competition Near for Residents of Lawrence, Mass.City Approves Video License for Verizon; 7,500 More Households Soon Can Get FiOS TV

LAWRENCE, Mass., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Residents of Lawrence are a major step closer to having a real choice for their cable television services, thanks to a newly approved agreement authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service via the most advanced all-digital, fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes.

Lawrence Mayor Michael J. Sullivan granted a cable franchise to Verizon Thursday (May 31), paving the way for video choice for approximately 7,500 more Massachusetts households.

The mayor's authorization brings to 49 the total number of Massachusetts communities where Verizon's FiOS TV is or will soon be available.

"We are thrilled to be able to bring FiOS TV to residents in Lawrence," said Donna Cupelo, Verizon region president for Massachusetts and Rhode Island. "Since the launch of FiOS TV in Massachusetts last year, we are continuing our efforts to meet the consumer demand for cable TV choice."

"By granting this license, the city of Lawrence has created a real choice in cable TV service for our residents," said Sullivan. "This is a significant advantage for Lawrence consumers because competition often results in new features, improved service and competitive rates. The license also provides additional funding for our public, education and government cable-access channels, and ensures that all parts of the city will be served."

FiOS TV is the company's new fiber-optic television service, which offers a better-quality picture, more high-definition and on-demand programs, and more reliable service at competitive prices.

Verizon currently offers FiOS TV to more than 270,000 households in 43 Massachusetts communities [see list below] as well as other locations in New York, New Jersey, California, Delaware, Texas, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

"As a result of this new franchise, consumers in Lawrence will be able to choose their cable provider as easily as they choose their phone company," said Cupelo. "Competition drives innovation, value and service quality, and it puts the consumer in control."

Verizon is currently in negotiations with some 20 other communities in Massachusetts to obtain additional franchises. For more information on the Verizon franchise process in the state, log onto http://www.verizon.com/ma.

Verizon research indicates 87 percent of Massachusetts residents favor more competition and choice for video services. Independent studies have shown that competition in the video market brings enormous benefits to consumers in the form of reduced prices, better packages and improved service.

The Lawrence franchise agreement contains provisions for the network's future growth; financial support and capacity for educational and government access channels; cable service to government buildings; and other important benefits to the town, including insurance, indemnification and enforcement protections.

"Verizon will compete aggressively for subscribers in Lawrence with our FiOS services, which are fueled by our lightning-fast fiber-optic network," Cupelo said. Verizon soon will begin its door-to-door sales campaign in Lawrence, explaining the many advantages of FiOS TV to local consumers.

Verizon is the first company to offer a fiber-to-the premises (FTTP) network, connecting homes and businesses directly to fiber optics on a widespread scale.

FiOS TV offers a broad collection of all-digital programming, two dozen high-definition channels, video on demand and more. Fiber delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen.

In addition to FiOS TV, Verizon's fiber network also allows the company to offer consumers and businesses high-speed FiOS Internet service at download speeds up to 50 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds up to 10 Mbps.*

    * NOTE: actual (throughput) speeds will vary.

(FiOS TV is available in Acton, Andover, Arlington, Belmont, Boxborough, Boxford, Burlington, Canton, Dedham, Dunstable, Franklin, Georgetown, Hamilton, Hopkinton, Ipswich, Lincoln, Littleton, Lexington, Lynn, Lynnfield, Marlborough, Medfield, Nahant, Natick, Needham, Newton, North Reading, Reading, Southborough, Stoneham, Sudbury, Swampscott, Tewksbury, Topsfield, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Wellesley, Wenham, West Newbury, Westwood, Wilmington, Winchester and Woburn. Verizon also has TV franchises in the Massachusetts communities of Marion, Mattapoisett, Middleborough, Rochester and Wareham.)

Onity Announces New Customer-Driven Electronic Locking System for Education Market--More than 50 colleges and universities helped develop the Integra 5 to meet their evolving higher-education facility control needs--

ATLANTA, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Onity, a leading global provider of electronic facility control solutions, announces today Integra 5, a new electronic locking system for colleges and universities. Features of Integra 5, such as client-server architecture, high-speed execution and overall security have the education market anticipating its release. And no wonder, because more than 50 Onity customers played a critical role in shaping the product.

"The Integra 5 started as a concept in-house," says Paul Love, commercial market product manager for Onity. "Our customers wanted a new electronic locking system with a client-server based architecture, secure network transmissions, fault-tolerant network operations and an updated graphical user interface - and that's exactly what we've given them with the Integra 5. This system is really more an accomplishment made possible by our customers."

The Integra 5's central architecture allows the system administrator to easily apply upgrades and perform system maintenance. Users never actually perform operations, but instead pass requests to the server which in turn performs the requested operation - reducing the risk of data corruption from disconnects. The Integra 5 also works with a variety of database structures, such as Firebird, Microsoft(R) SQL.

For security, network traffic is encrypted using SSL 128-bit strength for all data traffic between clients and server.

"By listening to what our customers have to say, we ensure that we continue to provide real solutions that best meet their every day needs," says Love. "We want our existing and potential customers to know we offer reliable support, where the customer-vendor relationship doesn't end after the sale. Our customers are our backbone, and our best sources for growth."

The Integra 5 is Windows(R) 2000, XP and 2003 supported. For more information about the Integra 5, call 1-800-424-1433.

UNLOCKING THE INTEGRA 5 -- Windows(R) 2000, XP, 2003 supported -- Client - server architecture -- Microsoft(R) SQL or Firebird database -- Operators do not access data share - only application server accesses data -- Network traffic encrypted using SSL 128-bit strength for all data traffic between users and server -- Can restrict specific user PINs and door codes -- Flexible ISO track data management -- Online devices may be controlled from any user PC

Sallie Mae Survey Shows Most Customers Take Measures to Guard Against Identity Theft

RESTON, Va., June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- For the majority of customers, paper-shredding is the method of choice for guarding against identity theft, according to a new survey by Sallie Mae, the nation's leading saving- and paying-for-college company.

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030617/SLMLOGO-a )

The new report surveys Sallie Mae customers who have entered repayment, as part of a corporate effort to educate customers on fiscal responsibility and sound debt management. Of the more than 2,000 respondents, nearly half (47 percent) reported shredding personal bills and documents containing private information in order to protect themselves against identity theft. One-fourth of respondents said they refrained from giving out their social security number in order to protect personal information. Twenty-three percent said they check their credit report frequently for unauthorized activity, and 2 percent said they avoid making credit card purchases online. Only 4 percent of respondents said they do not take any special precautions to prevent identity theft.

"Consumers generally make an effort to protect their personal property- such as wallets, cars and valuables-against theft," said Martha Holler, spokeswoman, Sallie Mae. "It is critically important that consumers guard against identity theft in the same way and make wise choices to protect their personal information and finances."

There are several ways consumers can protect themselves, Holler added: "When someone steals your identity, your finances and your credit score are at risk. Taking steps to avoid identity theft is much easier than repairing damage to your identity and finances. Be sure to guard your social security number, pick your online passwords carefully, pay attention to your mail and be cautious about what type of information you put in the trash. It is also important to review your credit reports at least once a year for unauthorized activity." Holler advises consumers to use common sense and take immediate action if they suspect identity theft.

The survey, conducted online at http://www.salliemae.com/ during February 2007, is part of a monthly survey series on a variety of debt management-related topics.

SLM Corporation , commonly known as Sallie Mae, is the nation*s leading provider of saving- and paying-for-college programs. Versus Technology Announces Second Quarter Results

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Versus Technology, Inc. ("Versus" or the "Company") announced revenues of $1,138,000 for the fiscal quarter ended April 30, 2007, compared to $1,246,000 for the same period in 2006. Revenues for the six months ended April 30, 2007, were $2,271,000, compared to $2,444,000 for the six months ended April 30, 2006. Adjusted for non-recurring items, revenues increased 14% over the second quarter of 2006 and 4% year-to-date. Versus' quarterly revenues can vary significantly depending on the timing and delivery of major customer projects. Accordingly, revenues reported in any one quarter are not necessarily indicative of what full year results will be.

Gross profits as a percentage of revenues increased to 66% for the quarter from 65% for the same period in 2006. Adjusted for non-recurring items, gross profit for the quarter was 57% in 2006. While sales and marketing expenses increased 33% for the quarter, general and administrative expenses decreased 37%, resulting in a 3% decrease in total operating expenses compared to the quarter ended April 30, 2006.

Versus reported a net loss of $198,000 for the quarter compared to a net loss of $389,000 for the same period in 2006. The decrease in net loss compared to 2006 is primarily attributable to the decrease in total operating expenses from the previous year and no interest expense in the quarter ended April 30, 2007, compared to interest expense, including accretion of debt discount, of $252,000 in 2006. The elimination of interest expense and accretion of debt discount resulted from the redemption and conversion to common stock of the Company's Series B Debentures in 2006.

The Company reported a net loss of $410,000 for the six months ended April 30, 2007, compared to a net loss of $764,000 for the six months ended April 30, 2006

Versus generated positive cash flow from operating activities of $505,000 for the six months ended April 30, 2007, compared to a use of cash in operating activities of $260,000 for the same period in 2006.

Computers for Youth (CFY), a non-profit organization launched in 1999, is the leader in improving the home learning environment of middle school children from low-income families. CFY selects public schools with high poverty statistics and then offers all the sixth graders and their parents a free computer-based home learning center, which they are taught to use at a Family Learning Workshop before taking it home. CFY targets sixth grade in order to intervene just as children's disengagement from family and school begins. The home learning centers come with Internet access, award-winning educational software, tailored web content, and ongoing tech support. CFY provides additional training to support parents as learning partners and help teachers strengthen the home-school connection. CFY's programs improve student engagement (two-thirds of children surveyed report working harder in school), student performance (three-quarters of children consistently report that having a home learning center helps them do better in school) and parental involvement (more than 90% of parents feel more confident in helping their children learn). CFY has also begun working on a broader scale to improve educational software for the home and influence education policy for both local and national audiences. CFY currently serves families in New York and Philadelphia and is expanding to three more cities over the next few years. CFY is now also launching an affiliate network of like-minded organizations which will be provided with products and services designed to improve home learning environments for youth across the country. In 2007 CFY will serve its 10,000th family. For more information, visit http://www.cfy.org/.

Westhampton Residents to Benefit from Verizon Wireless Network ExpansionInvesting to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access

WESTHAMPTON, Mass., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Hampshire County, Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, has expanded its network with two new cell sites. The new sites increase coverage and capacity along Route 66 in Westhampton.

This network expansion is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year, including nearly $318 million in New England in 2006 alone, to stay ahead of growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $35 billion - on average $5 billion a year - into its national wireless network as part of its commitment to offer customers the most reliable service available, including wireless data services such as picture messaging, text messaging, BroadbandAccess high-speed internet and the company's exclusive V CAST service.

BroadbandAccess Revision A offers computer users the nation's most reliable high-speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kbps, and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 mbps. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones over Verizon Wireless' high-speed EV-DO network.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter of 2007 as the company added 1.7 million net new customers and also reported the lowest customer turnover (highest customer loyalty) rate in the wireless industry.

The company's 'nation's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. Nationally, these test men and women drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than three million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

It's Official: Corpus Christi is EarthLink'edSecurity, Stability, Flexibility are Hallmarks of the ISP's Wi-Fi Service

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Corpus Christi residents, visitors and businesses now have access to one of the safest, most secure Wi-Fi networks in the world, with EarthLink's Municipal Networks business unit completing the transition of the City's existing network to EarthLink's wireless mesh network architecture.

Beginning today, customers can access the ISP's Wi-Fi services by paying an occasional use fee for hourly or daily service or a monthly subscription fee providing unlimited usage.

EarthLink brings Corpus Christi residents a 'landline free' way to access the Internet throughout the 55 square mile network. Consumers who sign up for EarthLink Wi-Fi(SM) will enjoy download and upload speeds up to 1 Mbps for a limited time promotional rate of $6.95 a month for the first six months, returning to the recurring rate of $19.95 a month thereafter. For consumers that want even more speed, EarthLink is offering an "extreme" product at 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload service for only $9.95 for the first six months, returning to the recurring rate of $21.95 a month thereafter.

Residential customers can also receive a Wi-Fi modem, which strengthens the Wi-Fi signal indoors, at no additional charge, if they sign up for a one- year commitment. The modem can also be purchased through EarthLink without the contract for $69.95 and monthly rental fees will be available in early June. Customers will also receive all the products and support they have come to expect from EarthLink, including eight mailboxes and the ISP's powerful protection tools, such as spamBlocker and the EarthLink Protection Control Center (TM).

Corpus Christi joins a host of other US cities where EarthLink has built municipal Wi-Fi networks, such as Milpitas, CA and New Orleans, LA. The company is also, at this time, building networks in Anaheim, CA and Philadelphia, PA.

"Our citywide wireless networks 'unties' residents and visitors from their desks or limited hot spot areas -- they can now access EarthLink Wi-Fi throughout Corpus Christi, including the airport," said Donald Berryman, president of EarthLink Municipal Networks and executive vice president of EarthLink. "We are excited to launch this network in Corpus Christi for its residents and businesses and to provide visitors occasional use options in Texas' premier vacation destination."

Berryman added that EarthLink expanded the existing municipal network created by Corpus Christi's Digital Community Corporation by deploying its Wi- Fi mesh architecture into areas that were not previously covered, therefore creating a larger local Wi-Fi footprint.

The ISP also worked to increase the network bandwidth speeds and improve its overall performance.

Consumers will begin to see marketing for EarthLink service throughout Corpus Christi, beginning today. In addition to signing up for EarthLink's monthly subscription product, consumers can also sign up for a monthly subscription from EarthLink's wholesale partners, such as People PC (http://www.peoplepc.com/) and DirecTV (http://www.directv.com/).

Wireless Communications Critical to Firefighters Battling WildfiresFirst Responders Across U.S. Turn to Verizon Wireless For Communications Support

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- With wildfires scorching thousands of acres across the USA over the past month, firefighters and other emergency responders are increasingly turning to wireless phones to communicate. Wireless technologies allow first responders to communicate over longer distances than many two-way radios and help coordinate the efforts of firefighters in remote areas. Verizon Wireless, the leading U.S. wireless company with the nation's most reliable voice and data network, is often called upon by local and state officials to provide this vital communications link to first responders.

In the most recent rash of fires in Georgia, Minnesota, California and Arizona, the company dispatched at the request of local authorities advanced mobile communications equipment, including Cells on Wheels (COWs), Cells on Light Trucks (COLTs) and other support, including donations of working wireless phones, to either enhance coverage or establish a wireless network where one had not previously been operating to enable firefighters and other emergency workers to communicate in remote areas where many wildfires originate. COWs and COLTs can handle thousands of wireless calls per hour when linked directly or indirectly to emergency telephone cables and sometimes creating a wireless network that can span miles of burning acreage.

Most recently, Verizon Wireless: -- Activated a mobile cell site to boost wireless coverage for crews battling the Promontory Fire in Arizona. At the request of Gila County Emergency Operations, the company sent Sundancer the Cell on Light Truck (COLT) to a staging area near the Christopher Creek area to enable emergency response teams and other Verizon Wireless customers to make more calls. -- Deployed a Cell on Wheels mobile cell site (COW) in Georgia to establish wireless voice coverage and capacity for firefighters and other emergency responders battling extreme drought and forest fire conditions in a remote area around Jesup, Georgia, near the Florida state line. Verizon Wireless was called upon to provide the "primary means" of communication for emergency workers in the area. -- Dispatched two Cells on Light Trucks (COLTs) in Minnesota and provided forty cellphones to help first responders who battled the Ham Lake fire in the Boundary Waters area near the Canadian border. The COLTs provided critical wireless coverage to the Incident Command Post and Base Camp as well as parts of the Gunflint Trail lodge area, which served as a staging area for emergency workers. Both COLTs operated on generator power. -- Supplied the Red Cross in California with 50 handsets, which were deployed at their Long Beach disaster center for use by evacuees of the Catalina Island fire. The company also supplied firefighters with 20 phones for use while battling the Catalina Island fire. -- Loaned about two dozen phones to the U.S. Forestry Service in South Florida to assist with communications as crews fought a number of wildfires. The phones were used by firefighters battling wildfires in the Big Cypress National Preserve, a 720,000-acre national park located in the Everglades south of Alligator Alley, about 45 miles from Miami. In addition, Verizon Wireless' network teams added antennas and adjusted the coverage footprint of two nearby cell sites to better serve the Big Cypress crews and the USFS base camps located at Monroe Station and Monument Lake.

"Having the Verizon Wireless COW is amazing," said Monroe Gains, Georgia Forest Commission Incident Commander. "It gives us a reach and a network we can tie into. Being able to come into an area where there is no cell coverage and within a short time, establish that is critical."

Verizon Wireless maintains a fleet of COLTs and COWs for emergency response. Verizon Wireless COWs and COLTs are self-contained mobile cell sites specifically designed for rapid, and short-term response. These mobile cell sites can process thousands of calls an hour, enabling more emergency response teams and other wireless users to make calls concurrently. COWs are fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell sites with single masts that enhance coverage and capacity. COLTs are 25,000-pound vehicles with two retractable masts, a microwave antenna to link network components, an emergency power generator and a small office. The COLT is also fully equipped with resources needed during emergencies including equipment, fuel, electrical generators, food, water and cots.

CCID Consulting: Unix Servers Enter SMBs in China

BEIJING, June 1 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), says Unix servers are entering the small and medium business (SMB) market.

Unix servers have long built upon their high performance, high reliability and high availability, allowing them to play a leading role in key application fields. However, the high cost and closed platform have kept many users away from Unix servers. Particularly as enterprises have reduced their IT costs in recent years, users now pay more attention to TCO. As a result, Unix servers have seen their market shares continually being taken away by x86. There has been a gradual slowdown in market growth. In such a market environment, many Unix server firms have realized the crux of their product development in the Chinese market. They have rapidly changed their strategies and product positioning and actively coped with market changes.

In 2007, IBM's Systems Department has listed actively developing regional markets, improving channels and getting deep into the SMB market as the foci of its development strategies. It will continue to implement its Blue Sky Program, get deep into cities of 2nd and 3rd tiers, greatly expand regional channel building and strengthen cooperation with its ISV partners. As for product sales models, it has also started to experiment with the massive marketing model for x86, by relying on more regional channel forces to expand the coverage of its Unix products. Through the penetration of its low-end products, the company hopes to drive up its high-end product sales and sell more Unix servers, thus raising its market shares.

The situation is expected to improve in 2007. Various signs give us reason to forecast a better market for Unix servers this year.

Market strategies for Unix servers have been adjusted, and thresholds are continuously being lowered. Unix server firms are now actively adjusting their product development strategies by changing their long-held high-end route and moving their high-end technologies downwards. They hope to take up the market through offering products in a low-high manner. Of course, such strategy adjustment is also a move to respond to changes in market demand. As the large-sized enterprise market is gradually being saturated, the SMB market is developing fast, where new demand is being continually replenished. On the other hand, it is also a measure taken due to competitive pressures and an offensive against x86 servers. Unix server firms are generally adjusting their product price. In particular, there have been unprecedented price drops in 2007. The price of entry-level Unix servers has directly approached that of mid- and high-end x86 servers. This has undoubtedly become very appealing to SMB users. Companies aim to lower the procurement threshold for users through these means and draw some SMS users with high growth potential into the Unix server camp. Then, they will naturally keep the follow-up products, services and upgrading in their hands.

Traditional industries have increased their loyalty to Unix server procurement. In China, Unix server users are relatively concentrated. In particular, the 2 major traditional industries of telecom and financial services are almost entirely controlled by Unix servers. These 2 major industries are used to developing and deploying applications in the Unix environment. In recent years, x86 server technology has matured. Some x86 servers have even rivaled Unix servers. However, security and stability uncertainties surrounding x86 servers make users lack sufficient confidence in migrating their application to an open architecture. Meanwhile, high migration cost also deters users in the Unix camp from easily giving x86 servers a try. In particular, key services building is still the market for Unix servers. Users in traditional industries such as financial services and telecom are now more loyal to Unix server procurement. This will become a main driving force for the Unix server market to grow. In a short period of time, the core role of Unix servers in these traditional industries will be something which x86 servers cannot shake.

Market gravity is starting to shift to markets of 2nd and 3rd tiers, and the massive sales model is being tried at the low end. With the gradual saturation of the tier-1 market, the center of market gravity has started to shift towards markets of 2nd and 3rd tiers. The monolithic, general-agent channel marketing model can no longer meet users' growing demands. This has made several companies adjust their channels. Almost all firms have realized the importance of regional markets. They have rushed to compete for regional channels. There is no doubt that competing for x86 server channels is a shortcut to build up regional channels.

Of course, Unix servers still have competitive advantages after a long time of evolution. The most important factor is that Unix server technology has been continuously innovated. With the continuous downward movement and innovation of multiple machine system designs, central data processing, high reliability designs, micro zoning and virtualization on large-scale hosts, Unix servers have attained unrivalled competitiveness. Meanwhile, an improving competitive environment and firms' active strategy adjustment will help Unix servers to come out of the low end during the year.
